Analysis

As conflict in the Middle East continues to widen, the Methodist Church has issued a clear statement of concern — and a call to prayer.

Standing in solidarity with the World Council of Churches, the Methodist Church has expressed deep concern for communities across the region facing fear, loss, and instability. The statement calls for a renewed commitment to dialogue grounded in the rule of law, and for a striving after peace and justice that refuses to accept the current trajectory of escalation.

The Revd Dr Leão Neto, General Secretary of the World Methodist Council, gave voice to the theological conviction underlying the call: "The way of Jesus is the way of peace. He calls us to follow peace and reject war. Jesus said: 'blessed are the peacemakers.'"

The Methodist Church holds in prayer its partners across the region — including the Middle East Council of Churches and the Iranian diaspora — and urges its members to engage in prayer, advocacy, and practical support for those affected by the conflict.

For UK Christians of all denominations, this statement is an invitation to join in that prayer — and to ask what more the Church can do to be a voice for peace in a world that seems increasingly unable to find it.
