'Sex Is Kind of Broken Now' — New UK Report Exposes the Scale of Children's Exposure to Pornography

A new report from the Children's Commissioner finds that 59% of children stumbled across pornography without looking for it — and 27% had seen it by age 11. The Naked Truth Project is responding with education, support, and a call for urgent policy change.

Analysis

The title of the Children's Commissioner's new report says it plainly: "Sex is kind of broken now." It is a phrase spoken by a young person — and it captures, with devastating accuracy, what is happening to a generation growing up with unrestricted access to online pornography.

The findings are alarming. Fifty-nine percent of children stumbled across pornography online without looking for it — up from 38% just two years ago. Twenty-seven percent had seen pornography by the age of eleven. Some had encountered it as young as six. And the content they are seeing is not mild: 58% had seen strangulation, 44% had seen sex while someone appeared to be asleep, and 36% had seen depictions of non-consensual acts.

The consequences for attitudes are measurable. Forty-four percent of young people agreed with the statement: "Girls may say no at first but then can be persuaded to have sex."

The Naked Truth Project exists to respond to exactly this crisis. The organisation works in schools, churches, and communities to provide education about healthy relationships, the harms of pornography, and the possibility of freedom and healing. Josh's story — referenced in the article — is one of many that illustrates why this work matters: young people who have been shaped by pornography can be reached, supported, and helped to find a different way.

The report's recommendations include equal online and offline standards for content, closing the VPN loophole that allows children to bypass age verification, banning depictions of strangulation, and investing in healthy sexual attitudes education in schools.

The Naked Truth Project is calling on churches to engage with this issue — not with shame or silence, but with the honesty and grace that young people desperately need.
