Barnabas Aid: Christians across the Middle East call for urgent prayer as regional conflict intensifies

Christians in Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon are facing displacement, imprisonment, and violence as regional conflict deepens — and Barnabas Aid is calling the global church to pray.

Christians across the Middle East are facing some of the most severe pressures in recent memory, according to a report published by Barnabas Aid on 19 March 2026. In Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon, the combination of regional conflict, economic collapse, and targeted persecution is pushing communities to the edge.

In Lebanon, airstrikes and displacement have devastated communities that were already struggling after years of economic crisis. Many Christians have lost their homes and livelihoods. In Iraq, the fragile Christian communities that survived the ISIS years now face new uncertainties as regional tensions spill across borders. In Iran, believers — particularly those from Muslim backgrounds — face imprisonment and the constant threat of violence for their faith.

And yet, Barnabas Aid reports, there are also signs of cautious hope. Some believers in Iran are quietly optimistic about the possibility of greater religious freedoms in the future, even as they navigate present dangers with extraordinary courage.

The charity is calling on Christians worldwide to pray specifically for the church in the Middle East — for protection, for perseverance, and for the peace that, as the apostle Paul writes, 'surpasses all understanding.' Barnabas Aid also provides practical support: food, medicine, shelter, and financial assistance to Christians who have been displaced or targeted because of their faith.

'The church in the Middle East is ancient, resilient, and deeply rooted,' said a Barnabas Aid spokesperson. 'But it is also under enormous pressure. Our brothers and sisters there need to know that the global church has not forgotten them — and that we are standing with them in prayer and in practical solidarity.'

For those wishing to respond, Barnabas Aid's website provides prayer guides, giving opportunities, and regular updates on the situation facing Christians across the region.
