Analysis

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has joined twelve other human rights organisations in issuing a joint statement ahead of the Berlin Conference on Sudan, calling for meaningful action to protect civilians from the genocidal violence that has gripped the country.

Published on 27 March 2026, the statement welcomes the formation of an international coalition committed to preventing further atrocities in Sudan, but warns that words alone are insufficient. The UN Fact-Finding Mission has documented widespread and systematic attacks on civilians, including what it has described as genocidal violence in Darfur. The Berlin Conference, the NGOs argue, must translate international concern into concrete commitments.

CSW has long documented the particular vulnerability of Sudan's Christian and other religious minority communities, who have faced targeted violence, destruction of churches, and displacement. The current conflict — which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces — has created one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, with millions displaced and aid access severely restricted.

The joint statement calls on participating governments to use the Berlin Conference to establish clear accountability mechanisms, increase humanitarian access, and apply sustained diplomatic pressure on all parties to the conflict. It also calls for the protection of civilians to be placed at the centre of any peace process, rather than treated as an afterthought.

'The people of Sudan have suffered enough,' said CSW's CEO. 'The international community has the tools to act. What is needed now is the political will to use them. The Berlin Conference is an opportunity that must not be wasted.'

CSW continues to monitor the situation closely and to advocate for religious freedom and human rights for all people in Sudan, regardless of faith.
