Analysis

The body of Marqus Masih, a young Christian farm labourer in Punjab, Pakistan, was found hanging from a girder in a cattle shed on 3 March 2026. A postmortem examination confirmed that Marqus had died before the hanging took place — meaning the scene had been staged to disguise what was in fact a murder.

Two Muslims have been accused of torturing and killing Marqus. His family and the local Christian community staged a protest after police were initially uncooperative in pursuing the case. Barnabas Aid's partners in Pakistan are now providing legal assistance to the bereaved family as they seek justice.

Marqus's case is far from isolated. Christians in Pakistan — particularly those from lower-caste backgrounds who work as agricultural labourers — are among the most vulnerable people in the country, frequently targeted for violence and exploitation with little recourse to justice. Blasphemy laws are routinely weaponised against them. Police often fail to act.

Barnabas Aid continues to stand with Pakistan's Christian community, providing practical support, legal assistance, and advocacy. For UK Christians, this is a call to pray for Marqus's family, for justice, and for the protection of Pakistan's persecuted minority.
